Why it matters
An uncapped flue is the single cheapest thing to fix and the most expensive to ignore. Rain going straight down a masonry chimney is what destroys the smoke shelf, rusts the damper solid, and saturates the liner — every dollar of cap avoids several dollars of interior masonry work.

Is a chimney cap really necessary?
It is the highest-return part on the whole chimney. It is also the difference between an animal problem and a call to a wildlife service — raccoons and chimney swifts both nest in open Kansas City flues every spring.
My chase cover is rusting. Do I need the whole thing replaced?
Usually yes. Once a galvanised chase cover has rusted through, patching just moves the leak. A stainless replacement with a proper cross-break sheds water instead of holding it and does not need doing again.
Can you cap a chimney with three flues in one stack?
Yes. Multi-flue stacks get a single custom-fabricated stainless lid covering all of them, which seals better and looks better than three separate caps.
