Why it matters
Carbon monoxide is odourless and the early symptoms read as flu. A gas fireplace that vents properly at installation can stop doing so after a bird nest, a disconnected vent section or a corroded flue — none of which announce themselves.
Questions we get asked
Does a gas fireplace really need annual service? There is no creosote.
It needs it for a different reason. Wood chimneys are a fire risk; gas appliances are a carbon monoxide risk. The vent can corrode, block or disconnect, and the only way to know it is still venting completely is to test it while it runs.
What do you actually test for CO?
We run the appliance and measure for spillage at the draft hood or vent termination with a CO analyser. A correctly venting unit spills nothing into the room; anything else is a finding that goes in the report.
